THE CHECK UP
Supporting
the Wellbeing
of Doctors
Dr Andrew Wines AM, an orthopaedic surgeon at
Sydney Adventist Hospital and President of the
Medical Benevolent Association of NSW & ACT (MBA
NSW & ACT), has seen firsthand the pressures that can
accompany a career in medicine. Through the work
of the MBA NSW-ACT, he is committed to ensuring
doctors and their families can access help when they
experience hardship or adversity.
“The wellbeing of doctors is fundamental to the
strength of our healthcare system,” Dr Wines said.
 “When clinicians feel supported, both
professionally and personally, they are
better able to care for their patients and
sustain fulfilling careers in medicine.”
This focus on clinician wellbeing was reflected at the
most recent Australasian Doctors’ Health Conference,
where clinicians and organisations shared ideas and
initiatives aimed at strengthening the health and
sustainability of the medical workforce.
Dr Jo Braid, a board member of MBA NSW & ACT,
attended the conference and presented on the impact
of Schwartz Rounds in healthcare. Schwartz Rounds
are structured forums that provide hospital-wide staff
with an opportunity to reflect on the emotional and
social dimensions of working in healthcare, work that
is often deeply meaningful but can also be challenging.
