At the San, our people and culture are at the heart of who we 
are. In this edition, you will learn about our new set of values, 
the San Spirit. Guided by our Mission, these values are a direct 
reflection of what our people have told us matters most. Over 
recent months, we have listened closely to feedback from across 
our organisation, including through the 2025 AMO Survey and the 
2026 Staff Engagement Survey. 
These values are the principles and behaviours that should guide 
how all of us - executive, managers, doctors, volunteers, clinical 
and non-clinical staff - should interact and work together every 
day. I encourage all our AMOs to embrace and support these 
values, helping us foster a workplace where we continue to deliver 
exceptional care while creating the best possible environment for 
our patients, doctors and teams.
For our AMOs working in procedural areas, we remain committed 
to providing the highly skilled teams, equipment and technology 
you need to deliver outstanding care. These areas represent some 
of the most complex and resource-intensive environments within 
any hospital, and we appreciate your partnership in helping us 
make the best use of these resources.
Submitting theatre and procedural bookings as early as possible, 
advising us of planned leave, and letting us know about sessions 
that are no longer required allows us to plan effectively, optimise 
staffing, and make valuable session time available for colleagues. 
All procedural bookings are finalised by 2pm the previous day, 
before patients are notified at 4pm. Once we have confirmed 
staff and equipment availability, we may be able to accommodate 
additional bookings. There is no such thing as a booking being 
submitted too early, and these small steps can make a significant 
difference to our operational efficiency and our ability to support 
our medical community.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for the important 
role you play in making the San a leading healthcare environment 
for patients, doctors and our people.
As we continue to strengthen our medical community, I would like to 
acknowledge several important leadership transitions and celebrate 
the outstanding achievements of our clinicians.
I extend my sincere thanks to Prof. John Watson AM, Prof. Geoffrey 
Herkes and Dr Chhaya Tangirala as they conclude their service on the 
Medical Advisory Committee (MAC). Their commitment, expertise 
and thoughtful leadership have made a lasting contribution to Sydney 
Adventist Hospital and our medical community.
I am also pleased to welcome ClinProf. Brian Owler AM, who 
commenced as Chair of the MAC and joined the AHCL Board of 
Directors in February 2026. A highly respected neurosurgeon, 
researcher and former President of the Australian Medical Association 
(AMA), ClinProf Owler brings a wealth of clinical, governance and 
health policy expertise to these important leadership roles. Welcome 
also to Dr Andrew Booker and Dr Ada Ng who have joined as Co-
Deputy Chairs of the MAC.
We also acknowledge changes in our Heads of Department, 
welcoming Dr Yuresh Naidoo as Head of ENT Surgery and A/Prof. 
James Symons as Head of Urology. I would like to thank Prof. Payal 
Mukherjee and Dr Michael Wines for their dedicated leadership and 
significant contributions to their departments over many years.
Finally, congratulations to the many San doctors who continue to 
be recognised for excellence beyond our hospital. ClinProf. Brian 
Owler AM has been appointed as Chair of the Board of the RACS, 
Dr Tanya Selak as the President of ANZCA and Dr Andrew Wines 
as the incoming President of the AOA (he was also appointed a 
Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day Honours 
for significant service to orthopaedic surgery and the community). 
Congratulations also to Prof. Payal Mukherjee and Dr Pecky De 
Silva on their election to RACS Council, and to A/Prof. Nicholas 
Ngui, recipient of the Bill Leventhall Award from the Rotary Club of 
Wahroonga. These achievements reflect the exceptional calibre of 
our medical staff and the leadership, expertise and commitment they 
bring to  both our hospital and the broader healthcare community.
