Dr Michael Mulcahy is a neurosurgeon and spine surgeon consulting and operating at Sydney Adventist Hospital. He provides assessment and treatment for a broad range of adult spinal conditions, with subspecialty expertise in minimally invasive, robotic, and endoscopic spine surgery. His practice has a particular focus on modern tissue-preserving techniques and on selecting the least invasive, most appropriate treatment for each patient, including non-operative care where suitable.
Following specialist neurosurgical training in Australia, Dr Mulcahy completed advanced spine fellowships at Westmead Hospital and with the Combined Spine Program at the University of Calgary in Canada. He was awarded the Stuart Morson Neurosurgery Grant to support his international fellowship training. These fellowships provided extensive experience in the management of degenerative spinal conditions, spinal deformity, spinal trauma, spinal tumours, and revision spine surgery.
Dr Mulcahy's approach to spinal care is evidence-based and patient-centred, with an emphasis on clear communication and individualised treatment planning. He also has a particular interest in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery pathways, which include preoperative preparation, contemporary anaesthesia, multimodal pain management, early mobilisation, and coordinated postoperative care.
Research
Dr Michael Mulcahy's research focuses on improving the safety and effectiveness of spine surgery and supporting patients' recovery. His research interests include minimally invasive spine surgery, endoscopic spine surgery, and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery. This coordinated approach combines preoperative preparation, contemporary pain management, early mobilisation, and postoperative care to support recovery. By combining clinical data with patients' assessments of pain, function, and quality of life, he aims to support better-informed treatment decisions, improve patient care, and enhance long-term quality of life.
Dr Mulcahy holds a a Master of Science in Surgical Sciences with Distinction from the University of Edinburgh, a Master of Surgery in Neurosurgery from Macquarie University, and the AO Global Spine Diploma. These qualifications provide a strong foundation in research methodology, critical appraisal, and evidence-based practice. As part of his academic and clinical practice, Dr Mulcahy teaches and mentors neurosurgical registrars at Sydney Adventist Hospital and Westmead Hospital. His teaching emphasises careful clinical reasoning, precise operative technique, and critical engagement with the evidence underpinning patient care.
