Dr Elie Sawan is an Adult and Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) with over a decade of clinical, academic, and leadership experience. He completed his Doctor of Medicine (2008) and Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery training in Beirut, followed by an advanced Paediatric Cardiac Surgery Fellowship at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne (2014–2016). He subsequently served as Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Senior Lecturer at Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital and University, Beirut, for over six years, before undertaking a further Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at Westmead Hospital, Sydney.
Dr Sawan's subspecialty interests span the full spectrum of adult and congenital cardiac surgery, encompassing neonatal and infant surgery, the Ross Procedure, Adult Congenital Heart Disease, coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement, aortic surgery, ECMO and VAD, cardiac transplantation, pacemaker and defibrillator insertion, and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. He is an active clinician-researcher with publications in leading cardiothoracic journals and a strong commitment to surgical education and mentorship.
Research
Dr Sawan is an active clinician-researcher with a focus on congenital heart disease and aortic surgery. His current research interests include the genetics and surgical outcomes of congenital heart disease, transposition of the great arteries (TGA), major aortopulmonary collateral arteries (MAPCAs), and aortic valve surgery in neonates and infants. He has contributed peer-reviewed publications and book chapters across leading cardiothoracic journals and texts, including the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery, Heart, Lung and Circulation, and JACC Case Reports. He has also contributed chapters to the Butera Atlas of Cardiac Catheterization for Congenital Heart Disease (Springer) and produced surgical education content for CTSNet.
