Profile
Born and raised in Malaysia, Dr Abi Thevakumar pursued her medical degree at The University of The West Indies (Trinidad). She began her career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the UK, where she met her Aussie husband and moved to Sydney. Her training was in some of the busiest and diverse hospitals in the UK and Sydney, namely Guys and St. Thomas' (London), The John Radcliffe (Oxford) and St. George Hospital (Kogarah). She is confident and compassionate in caring for all risk pregnancies, and women with a variety of gynaecological issues.
Her special interest is in Birth Trauma and ensuring couples are appropriately debriefed after a poor outcome or an unsatisfactory birth experience. She is passionate about ensuring couples feel empowered and safe before they embark on their next pregnancy and birth journey. As a busy mum of 3 children and having had challenging pregnancies herself, she can empathise with women embarking on their own journeys and ensures individualised care that's right for that family.
Her special interests in Gynaecology include managing heavy menstrual or abnormal uterine bleeding, menopause care, vulvovaginal disorders, cervical screening abnormalities and early pregnancy issues.
When she is not delivering babies, she is a Chauffeur, Chef and a fierce Soccer Mum! She loves to travel with her family and will oblige her little Cub Scouts an annual camp in the bush!
Research
Dr Thevakumar was instrumental in developing the Maternal Assisted Caesarean guidelines at one local hospital she practices at, with an audit of outcomes currently underway.
