Life Beyond Cancer

Having cancer can be a life changing experience – not only physically, but also emotionally. And whilst more people than ever before are surviving cancer thanks to advanced treatment options and increased awareness, it can still be an experience that alters your outlook on life and leaves Cancer Support Groups and Servicesyou with many questions about life beyond cancer.

For many, it brings with it a sense of uncertainty, concerns about whether the disease might return or that your body might not look like it used to. At Sydney Adventist Hospital we are here to support you through this transition and to help you live life to the fullest. Our cancer support team will answer your questions and assist you with moving forward and embracing life again. We can connect you with others who have been through a similar experience through our range of regular support groups, which can be very helpful when you are looking for understanding, advice and friendship, and offer allied health and complementary services to help clear the mind and improve the spirit.

Counselling and emotional support

Our Cancer Support Centre, located in Jacaranda Lodge and adjacent to the San Integrated Cancer Centre, is a drop-in facility between the hours of 8.30am and 5.00pm Monday – Thursday, and to 3.00pm on Friday. Here our warm and friendly staff can help you and your family cope with your cancer diagnosis and explain what lies ahead and what to expect afterwards. Talking to someone who understands how the process works can be a good way to work through the stress and anxiety and to feel more in control of what is going on.

Please call us on 02 9487 9061 to talk or drop in when we’re open. Alternatively, you can make an appointment to come in and talk to us at a time that suits you.

Support groups

Support groups are held on a regular basis, and are open to cancer patients and their carers. Often some relief and comfort can be found from talking or listening to others that are going through the same experiences. Belonging to a cancer support group can be like belonging to a family.

All meetings are held in the Cancer Support Centre’s Rotary Room at Jacaranda Lodge. For further information or bookings please contact the Cancer Support Centre on 02 9487 9061 or 02 9487 9062 or see our support group timetable.

Seminars and lectures

Throughout the year, the Cancer Support Centre holds various FREE education seminars and lectures.

All sessions are held at the Cancer Support Centre in Jacaranda Lodge. Partners and carers of cancer patients are also invited to attend. Bookings are essential for all education sessions. See our Event Calendar for seminar topics and dates, or for more information and bookings please phone the Cancer Support Centre on 02 9487 9061.

Newsletters and resource information

If you would like to find out more information relating to your type of cancer, treatments, side effects, or anything pertaining to your condition, the Cancer Support Centre has an extensive library of information resources available.

You can also phone the Cancer Support Centre on 02 9487 9061 if you have any questions.

Complementary treatments

During your cancer treatment you may need chemotherapy and radiation therapy and whilst these are the best way to treat your cancer, they can be hard on the body and mind. Our complementary services are aimed at soothing the body and restoring the spirit and form a valuable part of your treatment plan.

We offer 'gentle yoga' classes, 'look good/feel better' programs and mindfulness meditation throughout the year. Phone the Cancer Support Centre on 02 9487 9061 for more information.

Genetic testing and counselling

As you get to the end of your cancer treatment, you may have questions about whether your disease has any genetic implications and could affect other members of your family. The San offers genetic counselling services through Sydney Cancer Genetics located on Level 2 of the Integrated Cancer Centre and contactable on 02 9304 0438.

Screening services

Toward the end of your treatment plan, your doctor will talk to you about regular screening or surveillance you should do over time – either self-checks, regular GP examinations or other suggested screening services. Talk to your specialist about what sort of ongoing screening you should do and what services Sydney Adventist Hospital provides.

Palliative care and pain management

Throughout your treatment and beyond, if you are experiencing any pain, talk to our experts. We have a palliative care team that can visit you in your home or on the hospital ward to assist with pain management and give you solutions for both sudden acute physical pain as well as chronic pain that lingers.

Travel and accommodation service

If you or family members are looking to organise travel and accommodation to get you to the San for treatment, then our travel provider TravelClub can assist you. They do not charge any service fees and are part of the large Flight Centre network, providing security and the ability to access significant discounts. Call TravelClub on 1300 596 157 or click here for more information.
