gynaecologist treats the overall health of their female patients, treating problems and diseases of the female reproductive system such as breast and hormonal problems, urinary tract and pelvic disorders, and cancer of the cervix. Gynaecologists can be obstetricians as well, or alternatively they could have further specialised in gynaecological surgery, including oncology treatment.

Conditions gynaecologists treat that could impact your health and quality of life include:

  • Preventive care including contraception & birth control, pap smears, and breast examinations
  • Infertility
  • Incontinence
  • Endometriosis
  • Abnormal or very heavy bleeding
  • Fibroids
  • Cancer
  • Pelvic prolapse (falling/slipping of a pelvic organ(s))

Many gynaecologists undergo surgical training to correct female pelvic, reproductive, or urinary tract problems, including cancers of the reproductive system, and provide overall medical care for women whether it relates to the reproductive system or not.

If medicine or lifestyle changes do not help your condition, your doctor may suggest surgery, and learning about all your surgical options can help you make the best decision for your situation. Gynaecological surgery can be performed using open surgery (through one large incision) or minimally invasive surgery (through a few small incisions). Minimally invasive surgery can be performed using traditional laparoscopy or robotic-assisted da Vinci surgery. For more information on our extensive robotic surgery program click here.

If you are coming to Sydney Adventist Hospital for surgery you may find the information in our Gynaecological Surgery Booklet helpful.
