The San Menu

The main emphasis of the San Menu remains vegetarian, and considerable focus is placed on ensuring that a variety of high quality vegetarian meals are presented to our patients.

A small amount of some white and red meats are provided on the San Menu, with one hot meat item for lunch and one hot meat item for dinner available each day. At lunch a meat/chicken or fish sandwich is also available.

Pork and shellfish, biblically defined as ‘unclean meats’, are not available, and neither are alcoholic beverages, in keeping with the Adventist beliefs the Hospital was founded upon. No meat is served for breakfast, and all our soups and salads continue to be vegetarian.  All food served in the San Café, SanSnax snack bar, and in the Doctor’s Lounge also remains vegetarian.

The Sydney Adventist Hospital endorses the “Dietary Guidelines for Australian Adults” as recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (2003), and our menus are created to provide the benefits associated with following these guidelines, to the best of our ability.

Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods:

  • Eat plenty of vegetables, legumes and fruits
  • Eat plenty of cereals (including breads, rice, pasta and noodles), preferably wholegrain
  • Include milks, yoghurts, cheese and/or alternatives. Reduced-fat varieties should be chosen, where possible

And take care to:

  • Limit saturated and trans fats and moderate total fat intake
  • Choose foods low in salt
  • Consume only moderate amounts of sugars and foods containing added sugar
  • Prevent weight gain: be physically active and eat according to your energy needs
