Increasing skills and progressing careers thanks to San College of Education
San Operating theatre staff and wardsmen have increased their skills and career prospects after completing a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (HLT33115) course offered by San College of Education.
Education Officer and course facilitator Daniel Gallagher reports that the Health Services Assistance course provides new skills and develops skills useful for existing roles.
“The San is unique in being one of only 2 private hospitals in Australia who is registered thanks to the San College of Education to deliver this qualification to staff” says Daniel.
“The aim of the course is to provide better patient experience and increase patient safety and service quality through nationally endorsed training.
The course has been specifically designed for San staff by the College team of trainers and assessors with assistance from San subject matter experts.”
The 10 units of study cover communication and teamwork, time management, inclusion and diversity, WH&S, setting up and cleaning equipment, handling medical gases safely, transporting patients safely, medical terminology, basic anatomy and Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation.
The course can be a stepping stone with previous graduates progressing to careers in enrolled nursing, the Police Force and counselling.
San Operating Theatre Assistant Matt Chamberlain is one of the 12 recent course graduates who relished the on-the-job training.
“Certificate III was a great learning experience and it’s helped further my education.”
