San Water Launch

The San's own branded water, San Water has launched today for staff and visitors.

50 cents from each sale of either the still or sparkling and Australian sourced San Water goes to the San Foundation to support its donation of much-needed medical equipment and supplies to the Hospital.

The arrival of San Water builds on the Hospital’s adoption of NSW Health’s “Healthy Choices in Health Facilities Policy Framework”, which, while still allowing the sale onsite of nutritionally beneficial flavoured milks and naturally sweetened juices, resulted in last year’s removal of sugar-sweetened drinks from cafes on the campus.

NSW Health reports that the strongest evidence for the link between sugar intake and obesity is the consumption of sugary drinks.

San Nutrition and Dietetics report that based on previous year’s figures, this loss of 17,000 high sugar drinks means close to 687kg, or 161,246 teaspoons of sugar, wasn’t consumed, supporting the San’s mission of caring for our patients, colleagues, community and ourselves.

With 8,670 litres of water purchased across the hospital each year, the San Water sales are expected to raise $8,000 per year for San Foundation. San Foundation has previously provided funding to the Nutrition and Dietetics department for its food shaping project helping produce appetising meals for patients with swallowing difficulties, and its food labeller for correct meal labelling.

300ml San Water (Sparkling) in a 330ml glass bottle is $4 while San Water (Still) is $3 for 600ml, both competitive to other industry brands. Containing Australian sourced water and made from 100% recycled materials, the San Water bottles are recyclable.

From initiative to product, a range of SAH staff were involved from a range of departments including Nutrition and Dietetics, Food Services, Business Development and Marketing and the San Help Team.
