The Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical Education Centre will help address national health workforce shortages.

Health Workforce 2025 Doctors Nurses and Midwives Volume 1 reports that based on current data there will be a shortage of 109,000 nurses and 2,700 doctors Australia-wide by 2025.

The Clinical Education Centre (CEC) is a collaborative project between the Commonwealth, through Health Workforce Australia (HWA), the NSW State Government, Adventist HealthCare through Sydney Adventist Hospital (the ‘San’) and private philanthropy.

It will provide clinical training opportunities for student health professionals.

HWA has provided $12 million in funding towards the development of the CEC, the largest capital grant awarded by the Commonwealth (through HWA) to the private sector.

The Centre is also the result of a successful partnership with the NSW State Government.

"The Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical Education Centre will help train the doctors of the future" said NSW Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research, Jillian Skinner.

"The NSW Liberal & Nationals Government is providing $10 million to ‘the San’ to enable employment and training of 60 interns over the next decade, as well as providing new Hospital in the Home and Hospital in the Nursing Home services for residents of the Northern Sydney Local Health District."

The Centre is home to the Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical School of The University of Sydney (SAHCS), the first fully-fledged private hospital clinical school in NSW. It is also home to the Avondale College of Higher Education Faculty of Nursing and Health.

The Centre is a purpose built three level 3500 sq m facility providing two auditoria, a library, student common room, administration areas, a simulation centre, and tutorial, clinical skills, problem based learning, and lecture, rooms.

The Clinical Education Centre offers a multi-disciplinary training model by providing clinical placements for medical, nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy, radiography, occupational therapy, orthoptics, midwifery, dietetics, and other student allied health professionals.

By 2016 the Centre will provide more than 20,000 clinical training days a year to meet current and future demands.

"Education is a cornerstone of our philosophy of caring for our community" said Adventist HealthCare and Sydney Adventist Hospital Group Chief Executive Officer, Dr Leon Clark.

"We believe the diversity of the patients we care for, and the expertise of our medical, nursing and other staff provide a fertile learning environment for future health care professionals."
