Dr Norton trained in Gastroenterology at Concord and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals, and was then an NH&MRC Postgraduate Research Fellow at Prince of Wales Hospital, looking at the role of oxidative stress in chronic pancreatitis and obtaining a PhD from the University of NSW. Following this he travelled to the United States and was the Advanced Endoscopy Fellow at the Mayo Clinic in 1997, followed by a Fellowship in Clinical Pancreatology in 1998-99. Dr Norton was then a senior Associate Consultant at Mayo for 2 years, working in the Pancreas Clinic and endoscopic rosters for ERCP, EUS, laser, emergency endoscopy and complex endoscopy. He returned to Australia in 2001 and has pursued his interests in clinical pancreatology and endoscopy, particularly ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound and mucosectomy. He is currently Director of Endoscopy at Royal North Shore Hospital, and an endoscopist (mainly ERCP) at Sydney Adventist Hospital. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of the University of Sydney.


Dr Norton's research interests are broadly endoscopy and the pancreas. His previous research interests have included Gastrointestinal Bleeding, assessment of new electrical generators in endoscopy, neural networks for assessment of ultrasound and new techniques in polypectomy. Most recently, he has been interested in quality in endoscopy, particularly in relation to colonoscopy.
