Pain Management Medical Update for GPs

Topics and Speakers:

ADVANCED THERAPIES FOR CANCER PAIN
Dr Vahid Mohabbati FAChPM, FFPMANZCA, FRACGP, MD
Description: Conventional management of cancer pain is mostly based on the WHO analgesic ladder. This is often useful for some cancer pain sufferers but there remains a significant group of patients with cancer pain for whom pharmacotherapy is not as effective and/or comes with intolerable side effects and poor quality of life. Pain interventions will have a very significant and impactful role in managing these patients.

DOCTOR, I THINK I HAVE “NERVE PAIN”!
Dr Alan Nazha B Med FANZCA FIPP FFPMANZCA
Description: The delineation between nociceptive and neuropathic pain is not always clear with a tendency for attributing chronic pain to neuropathic causes. The management of neuropathic pain is equally as contentious. Having a clear understanding of neuropathic pain will better help manage patients with persistent pain.

THE MANAGEMENT OF PAIN IN OLDER ADULTS
Dr Jane Standen MBBS FANZCA FFPMANZCA
Description: Chronic pain in older patients is a worldwide problem. Management of pain should be multi-modal and incorporate drug and non-drug therapies. Education of older patients around physical and cognitive behavioural approaches to pain management is required as well as assistance in accessing these through multidisciplinary care.
