Advanced Life Support - Adults

Target Audience: Current practicing clinicians in critical areas. Limited places available. Priority for SAH staff working in ICU, CCU, EC and CCL


Prerequisites: Completion of ALS pre reading package and be competent in rhythm recognition.

Location: ICU Conference Room Level 7 – Clark Tower

Course Content: Based on Australian Resuscitation Council’s (ARC) guidelines. Workshop includes hands on skill stations and scenario based learning.

Advanced Life Support (ALS) - Adult (Refresher)

Target Audience: AHCL clinicians working in critical care areas ICU, CCU, EC, CCL, Recovery/Anaesthetics.

  • Completion of full day ALS workshop within the last 3 years
  • Completion of ALS pre-reading package
  • Be competent in rhythm recognition

Airway and Intubation Workshops

Target Audience: AHCL Nursing staff

Course Content:
Enhance your knowledge and skills in basic airway management, including use of basic airway manoeuvres, airway adjuncts, bag mask ventilation, assistance with intubation and managing difficult airways in the clinical setting.

Cancer Care (Workshop)

Target Audience: Nursing and Allied Health Professionals caring for cancer patients in an acute care setting.

Cannulation Workshop

Target Audience: Current registered practicing clinicians


Note:
This is not a Venepuncture Course
This training is only for the cannulation of patients over 14 years of age

Clinical Nurse Specialist / Clinical Midwifery Specialist Education Program

Target Audience: AHCL Clinical Nurse Specialist / Clinical Midwifery Specialists

Graduate Nurse Program - Perioperative

Target Audience: Registered Nurses


The twelve (12) month, fulltime, Perioperative Graduate Nurse Program consists of three stages within the perioperative environment as an instrument and circulating nurse (scrub/scout) role.

  • Stage One: Introduction to circulating nurse role
  • Stage Two: Transition to the instrument role
  • Stage Three: Development in all surgical specialties

The Perioperative Graduate Nurse Program also offers the opportunity for graduate nurses to complete the Clinical Accreditation Program in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney where the graduate nurse on completion will gain six (6) credit points towards a Post Graduate Certificate in Perioperative Nursing.

Medical Terminology

Interpret & Apply Medical Terminology Appropriately BSBMED301


Target Audience: People working in health care who are required to communicate effectively with doctors, nurses, allied health workers and patients and people working in industries that use or interpret health care related terminology as part of their work

Course Content: Use of appropriate medical terminology when communicating orally or in writing to patients, fellow workers and other health professionals. Basic systems of the body and referrals. Policy guidelines protocols and procedures in a medical setting. 6 x 2.5 hour sessions.

Workplace Supervisor Course

Course Content: This course is designed as a pathway to the role of Preceptor, Mentor, Clinical Supervisor, Team Leader/Clinical Nurse Specialist / Clinical Midwifery Specialist in the health care industry. The 2 day program covers the following topics:
Principles of Adult Learning
• Feedback and managing staff performance
• Assessment
• Mentoring
• Facilitation


This course uses Nationally Recognised Units of Competency from the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116):
TAEDEL402 – Plan, organise and facilitate learning in the workplace
TAEDEL404 – Mentor in the Workplace
TAEASS402 – Assess Competence


Participants will be required to complete approximately 60 hours of self-paced learning (including workplace based assessments) post attendance.


N.B: This course replaces the previous Avondale Preceptor course.

Course Content: Each seminar will be constructed around a specific theme. Possible topics may include but are not limited to lower limb compression, pressure injury, surgical site infection, traumatic wounds and skin tears. Presentations will be practical in their orientation and designed for ready application in the clinical arena.
