When You Leave

DISCHARGE

Following discharge from hospital, you will require someone to drive or accompany you home. Day Surgery patients can be met in the Day Surgery Discharge Lounge located on Level 4, adjacent to the Day of Surgery Admission Centre.

For overnight patients, discharge time is before 10.00am. We ask that you vacate your room before 10.00am to allow us to prepare for the next patient. If you are unable to leave by this time, please notify the Nursing Unit Manager who will make any necessary arrangements. The lounge rooms on each ward can accommodate patients who are required to wait beyond 10.00am.

When you leave, please make sure you take your belongings, valuables and X-rays home. You may ask the pharmacy for your prescription record card for your records, and this can be arranged through your ward pharmacist or Nursing Unit Manager. You may need to visit the Pharmacy to collect your discharge medications.

PRECAUTIONS

For the first 24 hours after your procedure it is important that you:

  • Do not drive a car
  • Do not drink alcohol
  • Do not remain on your own (unless approved by your specialist)
  • Do not make complex or legal decisions

We advise that you should be in the company of a responsible adult for 24 hours after a procedure. You may be asked to follow detailed instructions after you leave hospital. These may include medication instructions. We advise that having a responsible adult with you during these discussions is important following administration of an anaesthetic.

DISCHARGE PAPERWORK

On the morning of departure you may be given a discharge form which must be presented at the Patient Accounts counter, located on Level 4 near the main entrance to the hospital. You will need to settle your hospital account at that time.

YOUR ACCOUNT

You may need to finalise your hospital account before leaving.  Please see our Accounts section for more information.
