| Profile | : | Dr Katelaris has been in private urological practice on Sydney's North Shore for 20 years. He trained first as a General Surgeon and then sub-specialised as a Urological Surgeon. His post graduate training included time spent in Germany. Dr Katelaris has special expertise in the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer. He is an expert at performing radical prostatectomy with nerve sparing techniques. A comprehensive prostate cancer management service is used including the use of iodine seed brachytherapy, high dose rate iridium wire brachytherapy, and high focused intensity ultrasound (HIFU). He also has particular expertise in the diagnosis and management of male and female urinary incontinence, utilising urodynamic evaluation and modern minimally invasive operative techniques. He has a major clinical interest in the management of impotence including the use of penile prosthetic surgery. Kidney stone disease is a further important clinical interest, including the use of shock-wave lithotripsy and modern endo-urological techniques including the rigid and flexible ureteroscopy. Dr Katelaris is a member of the American Urological Association and attends their meeting annually in the United States. He is a member of the Pfizer National Advisory Board for Erectile Dysfunction. He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Director for Prostate Cancer Research for the Institute of Magnetic Resonance, and Director of the Prostate Cancer Rehabilitation Centre. | |||
| Research | : | Dr Katelaris was recently involved with the Institute of Magnetic Resonance utilising transrectal magnetic resonance techniques combined with spectroscopy for the early diagnosis of prostate cancer. His other research interests have included collaboration with the CSIRO helping develop a gene-based blood test for the early diagnosis of prostate cancer. He has recently been involved in the multi-national trial utilising Viagra in the management of radical prostatectomy patients. | |||
