| Profile | : | Dr Hughes graduated from the University of Sydney in 1989 with first class honours. He undertook advanced general surgical training at Westmead Hospital from 1993 to 1996, and gained the FRACS in 1996. In 1997 he was Clinical Supervisor of Surgery at Westmead Hospital, and from 1998 to 1999 he was Surgical Oncology Fellow at the Royal Marsden Hospital London, UK, in the Melanoma and Sarcoma Unit and the Breast Unit. On his return to Australia he was appointed Lecturer in Surgical Oncology at the Sydney Melanoma Unit, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. In July 2000 he returned to Westmead as a Surgical Oncologist. He has chosen to restrict his practice to surgical oncology in the fields of advanced skin malignancy, melanoma, soft tissue tumours and breast disease. Dr Hughes is developing a comprehensive skin oncology and soft tissue tumour service at Westmead. He is chair of the NSW Cancer Institute Melanoma group, and also chairs the San Breast Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings at Sydney Adventist Hospital. At Westmead Hospital he runs a Surgical Oncology Clinic at the Westmead Cancer Care Centre and chairs multidisciplinary meetings for Melanoma and Sarcoma, and can be contacted on (02) 9845-5200 regarding these. Dr Hughes consults at the San Clinic on Tuesdays and Fridays. His practice at the San is known as Northern Surgical Oncology, and his associate is Dr Andrew Parasyn. | |||
| Research | : | Dr Hughes' main research interests are in the surgical treatment of melanoma, advanced non-melanoma skin cancer, and sarcoma. He has participated in a recent international trial for sentinel node biopsy for melanoma. He has been the principal investigator at Westmead Hospital for two melanoma vaccine trials, and co-investigator on a number of other melanoma treatment trials. | |||
