30th Anniversary celebration

The San Day Surgery Hornsby has celebrated its 30th anniversary.

The Centre was first opened in August 1986 and was the first purpose built day surgery centre in NSW.

Attendees included medical and nursing staff including Brooke Wilson, daughter of the late Dr David Wilson who was the visionary behind the building of the Centre, and retired plastic surgeon Dr Cholm Williams who has operated at the San and SDSH for many years.

AHCL Executive Committee member Mrs Margaret Duffy acted as Master of Ceremonies for the informal event which commenced with a dedication by Nalissa Maberly from Spiritual Care Services.

AHCL CEO Phil Currie spoke about the passion and vision of Dr Wilson which led to the centre being built, which AHCL then purchased in 2001 before undertaking refurbishments in 2004.

“Revered for his surgical expertise and today credited for his pioneering work in radical prostatectomy for early prostate disease, Dr Wilson saw the potential for a free standing day surgery unit during his training at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester in America in the early 80s” he said.

“The anniversary celebration gives us an opportunity to thank all those involved in the establishment of this centre, recognise the role it has played in providing a model that inspired the widespread development of day centres Australia-wide, and to acknowledge the expert caring medical, nursing and other staff who have worked here.”
