Support the San's Tax Appeal

Patient Navigators Jenny & Alison with Mathilde and ElizabethBreast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in Australia. For many women, facing the intensive treatment to conquer this life threatening disease can be very frightening.

Sydney Adventist Hospital, the largest single campus private hospital in NSW, is a not-for-profit care provider and has introduced specialist Patient Navigators to support, nurture, guide and educate women with breast cancer, and their families. These expert clinical specialists are uniquely trained to support patients through the distress of diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, to recovery and remission. This innovative program is modelled on best practice international cancer care and complements the medical and nursing excellence for which the San is renowned.

In the last three years, the San has treated more than 1,000 women for breast cancer during more than 2,500 admissions. It costs $250 to assist one patient with five hours of this intensive one-on-one support.

We fund two part-time breast cancer Patient Navigators, Alison and Jenny. But with one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85, we urgently need your help to meet escalating demand and to raise the significant funds needed for this essential specialist service.

A gift of $50 today will support and comfort more women like Mathilde as they fight cancer.

A survivor of two diagnoses of breast cancer, a double mastectomy and a reconstruction, Mathilde was immensely grateful to have much-needed support from dedicated Patient Navigators, who understand holistic cancer care.

“The Navigators, Alison and Jenny, gave me their contact details and said they were available to talk anytime. They are very experienced and competent, calm and reassuring. It’s nice to know someone aside from the medicos who can help you deal with the day-to-day worries and the frightening, confusing and overwhelming feelings.”

The San’s Patient Navigators are a vital link between our cancer care team of surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, cancer support counsellors and psychologists, and the women bravely battling this disease.

Another breast cancer survivor thankful for this life changing program is Elizabeth.

“Breast cancer is terrifying. Just knowing there is someone you can rely on to talk with, who understands your fears, what you are going through, and can answer questions you may have not thought of when you were with your doctor, has been an immense relief.”

“Treatment was exhausting. I was incredibly sick during chemotherapy and suffered badly from side effects. But my Patient Navigator Alison, was during this time, and continues to be, a comforting tower of strength to me. My husband Ian, my rock, has also been reliably by my side for every test, procedure and treatment. I’m not sure how I would have coped without Alison and Ian. But thanks to their care I am almost through the most traumatic time of my life.”

I urge you to please help the San provide the ultimate in healthcare for our community. A tax deductible gift of $50 or even $100, would be put to immediate use to ease the journey of more women like Mathilde and Elizabeth.

Together we can give hope, inspiration, guidance and emotional support to women, and their families, experiencing the trauma of breast cancer and its treatment.
