BMI

BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is a simple equation. It gives you a figure which takes into account your weight based on your height. Find out what your BMI is, what it means and see what your healthy weight range should be based on your height.

Waist Circumference (WC)

WC stands for Waist Circumference and is a simple measurement which is used to measure disease risk. WC results have different meanings based on your gender. Generally the more weight your carry around your abdominal region, the more at risk you are for developing heart disease, diabetes and other related conditions.

Measuring your waist is sometimes tricky. Usually it is the smallest point of your abdominal area. A good way to measure this is by putting a tape measure or a piece of string around the smallest part of your middle and bend side to side. Where your body bends is normally where your waist is.

What do your WC results mean?

If your WC result is less than 94 cm for males or less than 80 cm for females, you are in the healthy range - keep up the great work!

If you scored more than 94 cm for males or 80 cm for females, unfortunately your waist circumference measurement means your risk of complications such as heart disease and diabetes has substantially increased. Our outpatient Dietitian can offer some simple suggestions to assist with decreasing your weight especially around your abdominal area. Please see our Outpatient Service Section or download some free resources below for helpful hints.

San Nutrition in conjunction with the San Cardiac Rehab also offers a 5 week Weight Management Program and a Weight Management Seminar, please see Community Programs and Seminars Section.

WC Disclaimers:
The waist circumference measurement is suitable for males and females >18yrs. WC does not take into account age, body build, muscle mass and ethnicity.
