The Unit is staffed with specialised Intensive Care nursing and medical personnel who treat and care for approximately 1200 Intensive Care patient admissions per year.

The skills of our experienced, dedicated staff combined with our well-equipped Unit featuring state-of-the-art technology provides for optimal management of patients with life-threatening or potentially life-threatening conditions.

Traditionally, the unit has had a major interest in cardiothoracic surgery but more recently the case mix is split between general surgical and medical patients requiring intensive and ventilatory care.

Other specialties catered for include:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Urology
  • Renal
  • Obstetrics
  • Oncology
  • Neurology

To optimise the services provided the department is closely approximated to the Operating Theatre Suite, Pathology, X‑ray and Cardiac Catheter Laboratory.

The department has 24-hour Intensive Care medical coverage by a qualified Intensive Care Specialist and Intensive Care Registrar.

Nursing staff to patient ratio of 1:1 exists for critically ill patients and 1:2 for others.

The department is well supported by the hospitals chaplains, social workers, speech therapist, diabetic educator and dieticians.

A well equipped lounge for visitors is situated adjacent to the Unit and a Receptionist is available as a resource for any information and support which may be required.

To facilitate patient care, visiting hours are between 10am-1pm and 3pm-8pm.  We recommend only two visitors at a time of close family members. Length of visits will be determined by medical and nursing needs.
