Sydney Adventist Hospital's Emergency Care Department opened in May 1996 – as the first private Emergency Care facility on Sydney’s North Shore. Today the San's Emergency Care Unit offers 24 beds in addition to a new 9 bed Emergency Medical Unit (EMU) which opened in May 2009. The San's Emergency Care Unit is the largest and busiest private emergency facility in NSW with a team of dedicated emergency care specialists, career medical officers and experienced registered nurses treating over 20,000 patients annually.
Services
Open 24 hours / 7 days with modern facilities and the backing of a large fully equipped hospital, the unit is well placed to meet your needs. We have a particular interest in cardiology and provide a 24-hour angioplasty service for acute coronary syndromes.
In addition, we support the community with the San Chest Pain Hotline, which provides around the clock telephone advice to patients with chest pain.

Approximately 15% of our patients are children, and we work closely with the paediatricians and paediatric surgeons accredited to the hospital.
We have developed outpatient treatment strategies for venous thrombo-embolic disease (clots in the legs or lungs) and for non-life threatening infections e.g. cellulitis or other skin infections, urine infections, pneumonia and other chest or throat infections. We also have close ties with the new Hospital in the Home service.
Management of acute wounds can be difficult. We have a variety of wound closure techniques and wound dressings appropriate for individualised care. In particular, we use sedation and analgesic methods to allow us to reduce the stress and anxiety of wound care in children.
We have a comprehensive on-call specialist roster, covering all of the major general specialties and sub-specialist groups.

Emergency Care is located on Level 3, Sydney Adventist Hospital and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Referral & Fees
A doctor's referral is not required for treatment. Fees for Emergency Care are based on fixed out-of-pocket expenses. Full-fee paying patients will have a gap of approximately $270 for the Emergency Care charges. We will bill Medicare directly for the doctors' procedures and consults. Other services (e.g. Radiology, Pathology and Physiotherapy) will charge their own fees. Concessions are given to some patients, including DVA patients, emergency service personnel and follow-up patients who re-attend within a month with the same illness.
Most of the major funds do not reimburse our charges. Some smaller health funds will contribute to the out-of-pocket expenses.
